AI Art for Climate Action

A program of Africa Science Buskers under the AI for Science Buskers initiative.

The power of imagination and AI for climate action

The UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Our planet is suffering.

Unleash your Imagination

Overview

Climate change is affecting all of us in different ways. We are experiencing the significant impacts of climate change, which include changing weather patterns, rising sea level, and more extreme weather events such as heat waves. It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives, costing people, communities and countries dearly today and even more tomorrow."To put it simply, the state of the planet is broken. Making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st century. It must be the top, top priority for everyone, everywhere."
- António Guterres, UN Secretary-General__
That’s part of why we created this AI Art for Climate Action challenge as part of our AI for Science Buskers program. Students use their imagination and AI text-to-image models to make cool art for climate action. The challenge empowers young people to use their imagination and AI to inspire, educate and mobilise communities for climate action. The artworks carry messages of hope, optimism, and above all – sounding an alarm on our world’s greatest threat.

Theme. Climate Action

Use the power of your imagination and AI to create a painting that carries a message to inspire or educate people for climate action. It could be a portrait showing snow in 2023 being less than it was in the 1993, a farm or crops being ruined by the climate change, a scene showing the use of renewable energy like a solar farm, a touching scenery of people or landscape being affected by climate change, etc.
Your artwork can fall under any of the focus areas of climate action below:
1. Renewable energy: Using renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro power to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
2. Energy efficiency: Reducing our energy consumption to reduce our carbon footprint.
3. Sustainable transportation: To help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
4. Enhancing water conservation, water efficiency and water re-use.
5. Forest conservation: Protecting forests and planting trees to help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
6. Sustainable agriculture: Promoting sustainable farming practices like crop rotation and reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
7. Waste reduction: Reducing, reusing and recycling waste to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
8. Green buildings: Constructing energy-efficient buildings can help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
9. Climate education: Educating people about the impacts of climate change to help raise awareness and promote action.
10. Climate adaptation: Preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change to help reduce the damage caused.
